Folium is an online tool that helps individuals to maximize their learning and track their progress towards professional competency. This is achieved through skills logging, mentor supported planning and reflection, and through recording and analysis of learning experiences throughout the course. The reporting functions allow individuals and organisations to monitor student progress, to review course outcomes and support course development.
Each skill can be graded using colour-coded sliders, from red (no knowledge or experience) to green (competent to perform independently) allowing students to identify where they need to focus their efforts and where they are ready to be ‘signed off’. Skills can be searched and filtered, allowing users to access the relevant skills rapidly.
Entries form the core of the Folium app, providing templates for common functions such as writing up a case, reflecting on a critical moment, planning or reviewing a placement or just recording an event. Each entry can have multiple skills attached to it and the skill level can be modified within the entry.
This section shows students where and when they are working in a workplace and allows them to record skills undertaken in that placement. Placement information is synchronized with student records but additional entries can be added by the student manually if necessary.
Entries are private by default, but students will be able to opt to share entries with each other, with their tutor / mentor or with a placement provider. This will allow collaboration, discussion and assessment of skills, for example a student may request a supervisor to ‘sign off’ one of their core skills.
